Our beginning

Hi, I'm Nic, founder and creative workshop facilitator at The Brighter Desk.

The Brighter Desk began from a personal experience that changed the way I think about wellbeing.

During my pregnancy, I experienced perinatal depression and found myself navigating a difficult period of overwhelm, uncertainty and mental fatigue. Like many people, I was constantly focused on what needed doing next and rarely gave myself permission to slow down.

Then my workplace organised a wellbeing activity: an afternoon of pottery painting. At first, I felt surprisingly anxious. Faced with a blank plate and a selection of paints, I worried about what I was going to create. I wanted it to look good. I didn't want to get it wrong.

But as the session unfolded, something shifted. For a few hours, I wasn't thinking about worries, deadlines or expectations. I was simply immersed in the process of creating. I left feeling lighter, brighter and more connected to myself than I had in months.

That experience stayed with me.

It showed me how powerful creative activities can be for wellbeing—not because of what we produce, but because of how they make us feel.

The approach

As I reflected on that experience, I realised there was one thing that would have helped me even more: a little guidance. While complete creative freedom works for some people, many of us can feel intimidated by a blank page, an empty canvas or the pressure to create something "good".

That's why I created The Brighter Desk.

Today, I design workshops that gently guide people through creative processes, helping them build confidence, explore new techniques and enjoy making without the pressure of perfection. My aim is simple: to create welcoming spaces where people can pause, recharge, reconnect and leave feeling brighter than when they arrived.

"I didn't realise how much I needed the chance to slow down and step away from the busy pace of life. The workshop felt relaxed and completely pressure-free, making it easy to unwind and enjoy the creative process. I left feeling lighter, refreshed, and more connected to those around me. A truly restorative experience that I'd highly recommend."
